Worldnews: Tanzania pesident John Magufuli sacks port authorities

Tanzania's new President John Magufuli has fired the governing board of the country's main port in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital. The government said more than 2,500 containers were sneaked out of the port without taxes being paid. This was discovered following a series of surprise visits to the port by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa over the past two weeks. About 90% of Tanzania's international trade goes through this port. It also services all landlocked countries surrounding Tanzania including Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Nicknamed "The Bulldozer", Mr Magufuli is reputed to be a no-nonsense, results-driven politician. Since coming to office in October, he has announced a range of cost-cutting measures, including a ban on unnecessary foreign travel by government officials and replaced independence day celebration with a clean-up campaign.
