Two words you never thought you'd see together: T-Pain and NPR. Two words you thought were practically synonymous: T-Pain and Auto-Tune.
So, you can understand our shock when we came across this video of the famous singer-songwriter on NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts series performing a number of his hit songs—wait for it—without any Auto-Tune!
"Thank you all for coming out," the 29-year-old told the small crowd that was present to watch him live. "This is weird as hell for me. Never done anything like this. Didn't think you guys were gonna be here, but I guess we're doing this..."
"I know everybody's wondering where the Auto-Tune is gonna come from. It's OK, I got it in my pocket," he joked. "It's totally fine. I got it right here, surgically inserted."
But you know what wasn't a joke? His singing voice! Seriously, you guys, he can really hit those notes.
With nothing but his pipes and his buddy Toro on the keyboard, T-Pain performed renditions of "Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin')," "Up Down" and "Drankin' Patna" that will absolutely, positively blow your mind. Who knew those club bangers could transform into such beautiful ballads?
Granted, everyone had to let out a chuckle when T-Pain sang certain lyrics. Imagine him belting, "Throwing that ass for days/ Booty going up, down" (among other famous one-liners) in a romantic tune...it's pretty funny, but amazing nonetheless.
For real, watch the video above and let us know what you think!
